US election warning: ‘Anti-Brexit’ Joe Biden to wreak havoc for Boris, says George Osborne

BORIS JOHNSON has been sent an urgent warning by former Chancellor George Osborne who said it will be “hard work” for the UK Government to form a relationship with Joe Biden.

George Osborne claimed that Boris Johnson will run into challenges with Joe Biden if he becomes President in November. He said that Joe Biden is aware of the Brexiteers in UK politics and will not be “particularly warm” to this Government. Speaking to CNN, Mr Osborne said: “Boris Johnson, first of all, is not a Donald Trump.

“He’s been around a lot in British politics and some would argue, he played up the populist side of his character.

“There’s no doubt that the Brexit Government here will face a challenge with the Joe Biden administration.

“Of course the US-UK alliance is long and during and it exists on many levels and there’s no doubt a British Prime Minister will always be welcome in Washington.

“But Joe Biden who I dealt with when I was in office, he knows the Brexiteers associated themselves with Trump.

“He knows they’re not his fellow travellers and they will find it to pivot towards a Biden administration.

“There will be some very specific things whether the UK does a trade deal with the US where Joe Biden and people like Nancy Pelosi have indicated it’s going to be hard work for a British Government.

“There’s a lot of frantic repositioning going on at the moment in London by this administration in Britain.

“But I don’t think Joe Biden will be particularly warm to this British Government and they’re going to have to work particularly hard to change that.”

It comes as Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis has played down suggestions that relations with the US could be damaged if Joe Biden is elected president because of concerns over the impact of Brexit.

Mr Biden, who goes into next month’s election ahead in the polls, has warned he will not sign a free trade agreement with the UK if the Good Friday Agreement is in any way undermined by the decision to leave the EU.

Senior Democrats have widely criticised legislation going through Parliament giving ministers the power to override elements of the Brexit withdrawal agreement relating to Northern Ireland, even though the Government has admitted it breaches international law.

Mr Biden was vice president when Barack Obama warned in 2016 that the UK would go to the “back of the queue” for a trade deal if it left the EU and – unlike Donald Trump – is known to be no fan of Brexit.

Mr Lewis however insisted Britain would continue to work closely with the US, whoever won the election, and said the UK Internal Market Bill was designed to protect the peace process in Northern Ireland.

“We absolutely protect and abide by the Good Friday Agreement. It is absolutely key,” he told BBC One’s the Andrew Marr Show.

“We have always worked very closely with whoever is the president of the USA. We as a country have a long, special relationship to build on, on a wide range of issues across history.

“One of them is the work we have done together – and with the Irish government – to ensure we got that Belfast-Good Friday Agreement. We will continue to protect that.”
